Gold Award With Soil Association
The Food for Life Gold Catering Mark with the Soil Association
In 2009 Little Green Rascals became the very first nursery in the North of England to be awarded the Food for Life Gold Catering Mark with the Soil Association. This award is in recognition to our dedication and commitment to providing the children in our care with the very best ingredients incorporated in our wonderful menus. Achieving such a standard is no easy feat and the process we must adhere to includes stringent guidelines, such as:
- Meals that contain no undesirable food additives or hydrogenated fats
There is and never will be a meal that we serve that will contain either of the above
- 75% dishes freshly prepared
100% of our meals are freshly prepared onsite daily by our fully qualified Head Chef and her kitchen staff
- A range of local, organic and fair trade produce is served
All produce served at Little Green Rascals is certified organic or fair trade and is sourced locally to encourage green miles
- 100% of our ingredients are organic
At Little Green Rascals we are primarily organic and this level fluctuates dependent on our daily menu. Where organic produce isn't readily available, fair trade or ethical alternatives are sourced.
- At least 50% is locally sourced
All of our suppliers are local and within a 20 mile radius of the nursery – our fresh fruit and vegetables are from Tadcaster and our meat suppliers farm is in Leeds even our dry goods wholesaler is based in Yorkshire.
- Organic meat, dairy products or eggs served must achieve the highest welfare standards.
At Little Green Rascals – we ask and hold copies of the certificates that both our meat and dairy suppliers hold to ensure that they are working to the highest welfare standards.
In order to retain this award we are annually audited by the Soil Association to ensure that we are maintaining the high standards.
The Soil Association are acutely aware of the benefits to the children of good, wholesome, organic food and are heading the Better Nursery Food Now Campaign. The key to this campaign is:
Better regulation for the food served to children in all early years settings;
Better inspection to make sure nurseries stick to these rules;
Better training in early years nutrition and cookery for nursery care and catering staff; and
Accountability from one Government Department for nursery food, to provide better nursery food now!
At Little Green Rascals we hope that our parents can feel confident that what goes into our menus to fuel our hungry rascals is the very best produce available. We are the only nursery in the North of England (and one of only eight nursery groups in the whole of the UK) to hold this coveted award. Our Rascals are fed every 2hrs & love it!
