In March 2017, Little Green Rascals opened its doors in the heart of the picturesque village of Bishopthorpe. Based in the beautiful old school building opposite the library, the setting boasts 3 beautiful rooms, which have had some of their original features lovingly restored and in true Little Green Rascals style have been transformed with our own “bringing the outside inside” style.
Our Bishopthorpe nursery is managed by Tim Hodge – a qualified Early Years Teacher, who is a shining example of the care and education we provide. The setting provides care for 30 children a day from 2 to 5 years of age. The Hive and the Oak room offer a family group style care – which means the ages are mixed (ensuring that we adhere to the Oftsed Regulation Ratio), this offers the children an incredible opportunity to learn not only from their stages of the Early Years Framework but also the love and respect for their peers both younger and older – this is a unique format from all our other LGR settings and works wonderfully here. Each of the rooms have their creative, role play, messy, sensory and quiet areas – to name just a few and also offer free flow to the outside including a courtyard and own mini forest school area.
We also host our Out of School and School Holiday Club from this setting – if you would like more information on these services then please click here
The Little Green Rascals ethos is followed here at Bishopthorpe, where our organic menus are prepared in-house daily by our wonderful cook Michelle, featuring herbs and vegetables from our kitchen gardens. We have one meat-free day per week and encourage our children to try new ingredients and flavours – our parents and carers are always astounded to hear that their little ones have been dining on some of the wonderful things that we have on our menus – especially when it’s something they point blank refuse to eat at home! Our nappies, creams and ointments all remain organic or ethically sourced and where possible, we use (and suggest) homeopathic remedies before administering a treatment that could/would contain a minimal amount of chemicals.
The physical and mental wellbeing of each individual child is of paramount importance to us here at Little Green Rascals, that’s why we are huge advocates of a good snuggle as we recognise this can help enormously to settle a child when they are feeling anxious at being separated from their parents/carers. We even extend these snuggles to the parents/carers too, as well as a lovely warm drink, a box of tissues and a quiet place to gather yourself back together (we have an open-door policy in all the offices) – the settling in period isn’t necessarily easy for you guys too! It is also why we allow daily access to our great outdoor spaces (come rain or shine), it’s quite miraculous the calming influence the great outdoors can have for our rascals - where they can ride bicycles and scooters, play in the mud kitchens or jump in the deepest of puddles!
Our Forest School Approach is followed at all sites throughout the Little Green Rascals family and at Bishopthorpe, we have the most magical of sites situated within just 3 miles of our nursery. With the suitable clothing adorned for the days forecast – we set off in our very own minibus for an adventure where the children can learn to take calculated risks, use tools with guidance, and explore the outdoor environment whilst under supervision. From previous experience, it is here where the children really thrive, their confidence rockets and their ability to learn as well as their personality’s blossom. The sessions are planned and may include a hunt for fairies, a bug safari or even building a den and a campfire lunch – whatever the activity, you can be assured that your rascal will have a wonderful time.
As well as our Forest School, we also offer a range of optional extra-curricular activities such as Science classes, Yoga, Drama, French and Spanish lessons, ballet and lots of other sporty classes which are great fun for our little rascals – the idea for such classes is that your rascals can be encouraged to have a hobby during nursery time, which in turn will free up the important family time in the evenings and weekends.
Parent Partnerships are hugely important to us at Little Green Rascals and we try hard to maintain a great open honest relationship with our parents & carers. We send a monthly communication email to each parent including a little snapshot of our week, along with any important information/news, we use a nursery software package that enables daily updates, instant messaging and automatic reminders – this can be accessed using an app on your smart phone but most importantly we have an open-door policy where we will always take the time to talk and listen to any concerns or feedback – Afterall you know your child better than anyone and if we can improve our services to you in anyway then we are always willing to try.
